I have a bit of a quandary. My boys (ages 7 and nearly 10) have decided that the need to wear deodorant. The almost ten-year-old might have a semi-legitimate argument, although I've never thought he stank anywhere but his feet. And, I'm all for encouraging proper personal hygiene, but it seems like starting at seven is a little young.
So, I'm not sure what to do about this. Here is what is bugging me now. They are so set on this that they're sneaking in and using my husband's deodorant when he's at work. I know this all started because their 13-year-old cousin really does need deodorant, and his mom makes a big deal out of it when he doesn't wear it. I suppose this problem is better than that. I'd rather have them not stink and wear deodorant than stink and not wear it.
Should I just buy them each their own stick of deodorant and let them wear it? It seems premature, but does it matter all that much? Anyone with boys have advice on this one?

I think my boys were probably 10 or 11 when I bought them some. And I recently got Kynzie some as well because by-golly she smelled funky! I don't know if there's harm in letting them wear it before they need to, maybe it would get them in a good habit of using it before they actually need it, who knows.
ReplyDeleteI remember Taylor wanting to wear it at nine! I didn't buy her any until this past year though. I don't think it would harm anything, except having to spend the money on it for a couple of years they don't need it... Tell them when they start stinking you'll get them some and hide Nathan's.
ReplyDeleteI say let them have at it. There is no harm in it and the desire may wear off after awhile or they will get good habits so that they won't forget to put it on like Caedyn. I find it amusing since my personal experience with buying my first deodorant was one of complete embarrassment. I insisted that there should be no scent so that no one would know that I was wearing such a thing. I hope my children aren't as psycho about their changing bodies as there mother!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's so cute! I have a cousin the same age as my older boys, and he really stinks me out. I actually bought some spray kind just to decontaminate him every time he came over to play. I'd just get them each a little .99 trial size, and let them get bored with it, or lose it. Whichever happens first. Until then, it'll smell like you have a man around the house all the time!
