In Poor Taste

Apparently I've been burning bridges. I'm pretty sure there was another Girls Night Out last night, and this time I wasn't invited... most likely it's because I don't like Facebook and games that make people behave badly.

Since I'm already on a roll not making friends around here, I might as well add fuel to the fire. This week I received a very disturbing invitation. I have changed the names to protect the innocent. It reads:

Mary's "American Girl" Movie and Birthday Party

Come celebrate Mary's 7th birthday with us. We want to introduce you to a new favorite thing of hers: Emily Rose @ Home. We provide unique high quality and affordable clothing and furniture for 18-inch soft-body dolls. Our clothes will fit the American Girl Doll, Magic Attic, Our Generation, etc. Bring your daughter and her doll and try it out. Be one of the first to see this new and exciting merchandise! Samples of clothes and furniture will be available to look at, feel and try. Great gifts for granddaughters, too. Remember, Christmas will be here before you know it!

That, of course, is followed by the RSVP number, etc.

Wait just a minute, People!

I'm all for birthday parties. And, I'm all for sales parties. But, I completely object to a sales party that is disguised as a birthday party. Let me give you my thought process as I read this....

My daughter is invited to this party. I don't recognize the name of the girl, and look, she's seven and my daughter is only five, so I'm pretty sure they just went through the entire primary roster and invited every girl. I would be obligated to bring a gift, and on top of that, they want to show my daughter these neat, and most likely expensive doll clothes, then use my own daughter's powers of coercion to force me to buy them, too.

Can I say loud and clear, NO THANK YOU! Then, two days before the party, I received a facebook message reminding me of this party. It took a great deal of self-control on my part just to delete the message and not send back a nasty reply. (But, you know, I thought of Kim's nasty email that was accidentally sent, so I was trying to play nice here.)

Am I wrong to be so upset about this? I cannot help but feel that it is in poor taste. What does that teach little girls about birthdays? It's not enough to have a party and have everyone bring a gift, but they have to buy stuff, too? Plus, I don't even know this little girl, so they'll invite my daughter as long as they think they can drum up business from us, but if it were a regular party, she would have been excluded.

I say, if you want to sell doll clothes, then sell doll clothes. And, if you want to have a birthday party, have a birthday party, but let's not confuse the two.

Feel free to chide me. Like I said, I'm on a roll burning bridges.

  1. oh my... i'm am with you on this one. I think it is awful to have people bring gifts and them make them or their child feel bad or obligated to buy more!!!

  2. Wow!! I'm speechless... I've seen some pretty aggressive selling techniques, but this one tops it all. A birthday party invite? TACKY!!!

  3. I did feel the same way about the invite being a bday party - I went and even though Chelsea is friends with this girl we did not bring a gift knowing that I'd be spending $ to buy my girls3 Christmas presents.

Sorry about you feeling left out. I have had similar feelings here. We went out for Natalie's birthday (just 5 of us). Are you going to the RS thing on Saturday b/c I'd love someone to carpool with.

  4. So, I can see sending an invitation to a party to help people "new" in the ward to mingle and make new friends. Knowing the town as I use to, this would have been the old motivation. However, as I've been gone a long time, I don't know the logistics and would therefore have been VERY annoyed with the invitation, as well. I do know that "parties" where things are sold are one of the things my mom gets a little out-of-sorts with, too. You are not alone!

  5. That is so unfair to that poor little girl! Can you imagine having your mom throw in a money making scheme in the middle of your birthday party...I agree, that is Tacky beyond all belief. I just don't get some people and I don't think you are the one that needs to worry about burning bridges.

  6. If you didn't want to come to my daughter's party, you should have just told me! Now I'm humiliated because you posted it on your blog. That's the last invite you get from me!

  7. Wow! This blows me away. I thought stuff like this was only urban legend. How tacky. One urban legend that I was so glad to confirm was real... I actually met a lady who arrived at the hospital pregnant with her first child because "she felt a little funny". Turns out she was dialated to 10 and had the baby within 45 mintues. True Story!!!
    BTW - Hi Amy!!!

  8. I don't get invited to a lot of things either. But, I don't take it personally. It's hard living in an area like this, there are not a lot of social things going on. So when we hear about something coming up, we want to go. However, I don't think people are obligated to go through the RS roster and invite everyone to girls' night.
I wasn't invited either, and I'm totally okay with that. I'm sure they didn't leave you out on purpose.
It's taken me awhile to get used to living here. I don't go out of my way to initiate social events, maybe if I did, I would be asked to do more things.
I'm sorry it's been so hard for you to adjust to living here. I've enjoyed the few conversations that we've had. Hopefully, we can have more.

  10. I'm right there with you Michelle. I had to bite my tongue hard when i got the invite. I don't have girls! And I go visting teaching to the person selling the clothes. Sorry that you are having a hard time adjusting. I have been here ten and a half years and still feel like I don't fit in. Amy Allen
